MANAA Approves of Comcast/NBCU merger

(On December 15, 2010-Karen Narasaki sent a letter (cc’d to  Commissioners Michael J. Copps, Robert M. McDowell, Mignon Clyburn, and Meredith Attwell Baker) to Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, D.C.  On behalf of the five organizations that signed new Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with Comcast–Asian American Justice Center, Organization of Chinese Americans, Japanese American Citizens League, East West Players, and Media Action Network for Asian Americans–“to urge your approval of the Comcast and General Electric’s (GE) proposed NBC Universal (NBCU) joint venture.”

January 18, 2011-The FCC and Department of Justice—with several conditions—approves of the merger between NBC Universal and Comcast.

Late February-As per the MOU, Comcast chooses individuals from four of the five co-signing groups to be on the Comcast Asian American Advisory Council.  MANAA is the only organization not chosen.

March 22, 2012-At the office of Craig Robinson (Executive VP of Diversity, NBC), MANAA Founding President Guy Aoki and East West Players’ Marilyn Tokuda, chairs of the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (APAMC), sign a letter asking to have Karen Narasaki’s term as chair of the Advisory Council extended for another year.
